Visit the site of a key battlefield that took place around the turn of 1862 and 1863 during the Civil War. The Stones River National Battlefield is a massive space in Murfreesboro, Tennessee where the Battle of Stones River took place. It was here where the Union forces repelled a series of Confederate attacks as more than twenty thousand forces between the two sides were killed.
Walk along the dense forests of the Murfreesboro, TN battlefield and see numerous spaces where strategic moves were made by Union forces to turn the tide of the war. Notice the remnants of cannons and other weapons that were used around the site as well as some medical stations and tents. Look for a few bullet holes around some of the trees in the park.
Travel to the cemetery at the battlefield site in the City of Murfreesboro. Thousands of people from the battle are buried here although a few thousand have never been identified.
See the Hazen’s Brigade Monument at the end of the cemetery. Built in 1863, it is the oldest known Civil War memorial that is still intact at its original location. The market honors people on the two sides who gave their lives for their causes.
