See the resting spaces of some of the many soldiers who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War in Franklin, TN. The McGavock Confederate Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries for the Confederacy in the country. It is on land that was donated by a local family.
The people buried here are ones who died in 1864 during the Battle of Franklin. Look around the stones to see the names of the people who served, the states they were from and the individual segments of the military they were assigned to. A few of the stones are from the nineteenth century although some have been replaced or restored as a means of properly identifying where certain people are buried at.
The people buried here are sorted by the states that they were from. Most of the dead were from Mississippi although Tennessee and Arkansas had high casualty totals as well. A few hundred people have remained unidentified and are buried in their own individual section of the cemetery in the City of Franklin.
Walk along the many graves and see the trees surrounding the region. The trees have been heavily manicured here in Franklin, Tennessee to ensure that all burial sites are properly protected without obstructions.
